Roofing Dumpster Rental Guide — Eastern Shore Maryland
Roofing debris is one of the heaviest materials you can put in a dumpster. Choosing the wrong size means paying overweight fees or needing a second haul. This guide helps you pick the right container for your roof tear-off so you can stay on budget and keep your job site clean.
Why Roofing Jobs Are Different
Most dumpster rentals are about volume — how much space your debris takes up. Roofing is the exception. Shingles, underlayment, flashing, and nails are dense and heavy. A dumpster that looks half-full can already be at its weight limit. That is why weight matters more than size when you are planning a roofing dumpster rental.
On the Eastern Shore, most residential roofs are asphalt shingle. A single layer of asphalt shingles weighs roughly 2 to 2.5 tons per 1,000 square feet (about 20 to 25 squares). If your home has two or three layers of shingles stacked on top of each other, multiply accordingly. That weight adds up fast.
Which Size Dumpster for Your Roof?
Small Roof (Under 1,500 sq ft) — Single Layer
A 20 yard dumpster is the right call for most single-layer roofs under 1,500 square feet. The 3-ton weight allowance gives you enough room for the shingles, underlayment, and incidental debris. You will likely use about half the volume of the container, but the weight limit is the controlling factor.
Recommended: 20 Yard — $570, includes 3 tons
Medium Roof (1,500–2,500 sq ft) — Single Layer
A single-layer tear-off on a medium-size home will produce roughly 3 to 5 tons of debris. A 20 yard container will hold the volume, but you may bump up against the 3-ton weight limit. If you suspect your roof is on the heavier side — thick architectural shingles, multiple layers of underlayment — consider a 30 yard or plan for a possible overage charge of $95 per additional ton.
Recommended: 20 or 30 Yard — $570, includes 3 tons
Large Roof or Multi-Layer Tear-Off
Roofs over 2,500 square feet, or any roof with two or more layers of shingles, can easily exceed 5 tons. A 30 yard dumpster gives you the most volume, but you will almost certainly go over the included 3-ton weight allowance. Budget for overweight charges at $95 per ton, or ask us about scheduling a mid-job swap — we pick up a full container and drop off an empty one so you can keep working without interruption.
Recommended: 30 Yard — $570, includes 3 tons (overweight likely)
Weight Warning
Do not assume a 10 yard dumpster will work for a roofing job. Even though the shingles might physically fit, a 10 yard container only includes 1 ton — most roofing tear-offs weigh at least 2 tons. You would end up paying significant overage fees. Start with a 20 yard minimum for any roofing project.
Job-Site Placement Tips
Where you park the dumpster matters on a roofing job. Ideally, place it as close to the house as possible so your crew can toss debris directly from the roof into the container. This saves hours of ground cleanup and keeps nails off the lawn.
Make sure the delivery path is clear — our trucks need about 60 feet of straight clearance to roll off the container. If your driveway curves or has low-hanging branches, let us know ahead of time and we will figure out the best approach.
On the Eastern Shore, many homes in Easton, St. Michaels, and Cambridge have gravel or shell driveways. We can place plywood under the container to protect your surface. Just ask when you schedule delivery.
Tarping and Rain Considerations
Rain-soaked shingles are significantly heavier than dry ones. If your roofing job spans several days and rain is in the forecast, consider covering the loaded dumpster with a tarp overnight. This keeps the weight down and prevents water from pooling at the bottom of the container. Our Eastern Shore weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring and fall, so plan for it.
Tips for Contractors
If you are a roofing contractor working multiple jobs on the Eastern Shore, we can set up standing delivery schedules. Call us at 410-820-6414 to discuss volume pricing and recurring delivery arrangements. We dispatch from Easton, so turnaround times to Talbot, Dorchester, Caroline, and Queen Anne's counties are fast.
We also offer same-day swaps. If your crew fills a container before the job is done, call us and we will swap it out — usually the same afternoon. Flat-rate pricing applies to each container, so you always know what the cost will be.
