Dumpster Rental vs Junk Removal: Which One Fits Your Cleanout?
Dumpster rental vs junk removal comes down to who does the lifting. With a dumpster, you load it yourself over up to 14 days and pay one flat price. With junk removal, a crew comes in, carries everything out and leaves the same day. If you can do the lifting, or line up help, a dumpster usually costs less per load. Call us and we'll tell you which size fits.
Updated October 2026 · Yard Works Plus, roll-off dumpster rental based in Easton, MD. We rent dumpsters. We don't send a crew to load them, so this page says plainly when a junk hauler is the better call.

When a dumpster is the better choice
- The job is big. A packed garage, a whole house, an estate or a renovation fills a junk truck more than once, and each truckload is priced on its own. One 20 or 30 yard dumpster holds a lot more, for one price.
- You want time. Cleanouts stall. Sorting what to keep from what to toss takes longer than anyone plans, and 14 days lets you work weekends and evenings at your own pace.
- The debris keeps coming. If you're tearing out a kitchen or bathroom, or the cleanout is part of getting a house ready to sell, you're filling it in stages, not in one afternoon.
- You have help lined up. Family, friends, or a hired crew can load a dumpster. Many local moving companies and day-labor services will load one by the hour, which keeps the labor bill separate and under your control.
For mixed household junk, the 30 yard is worth a look. It costs $50 more than the 20 and holds half again as much, with the same 3-ton allowance, as long as you have room for a 22-foot box.
When junk removal is the better choice
- You can't do the lifting and don't want to hire it out. A junk crew carries it down the stairs and out the door for you.
- It's a handful of items. One old sofa, a recliner and a few boxes don't need a dumpster sitting in the driveway for two weeks.
- There's nowhere to put a dumpster. A 10 yard needs about 14 by 10 feet of driveway plus roughly 22 feet of straight approach for the truck. A townhouse with street parking only may not have it, and a dumpster on a public street usually needs a permit from the town or county.
- You need it gone today. A crew can clear a room in one visit. A dumpster has to be delivered, loaded and picked up.
Even junk haulers rent roll-offs. Some junk removal companies use our containers on big cleanouts so their trucks can keep running pickups instead of driving to the dump.
What about hauling it yourself?
If you own a truck or trailer, you can take it to the transfer station yourself. You'll pay by weight at the scale: the Midshore Regional Solid Waste System's standard tipping fee rose on July 1, 2026 to $85.50 a ton at the Midshore I transfer station in Easton and $74.50 a ton at the Midshore II facility in Ridgely, according to Talbot County's announcement. For a few loads that's fine. For a house full of furniture, count the trips, the fuel and the weekends before you decide.
What can go in either one
The same disposal rules apply no matter who hauls it. Hazardous waste, paint that's still wet, chemicals, car batteries, asbestos, propane tanks and appliances that still have Freon can't go in a dumpster, and junk crews set their own limits, so ask before they arrive. Mattresses can go in ours for $35 each, and tires carry a surcharge. For paint, solvents and chemicals, Maryland's household hazardous waste program lists collection options. Our list of what can't go in a dumpster has the details and where each item can go instead.
Fall and holiday cleanouts
September through November is one of our busiest stretches: estate cleanouts, clearing the garage before the holidays, and roof tear-offs before winter. If you're leaning toward a dumpster, book a few days ahead to get the delivery day you want. For help with the size, our dumpster size guide compares the 10, 20 and 30 yard side by side.
Who a Yard Works Plus dumpster isn't for
We'd rather tell you now than after delivery. A dumpster from us isn't the right fit if nobody can load it, if you only have a few items, or if there's no level spot on your property for the box and the truck. In those cases, call a junk removal company. If you have the space and the hands, a dumpster is usually the cheaper way to clear a lot of stuff.
